This week’s post features Victoria Bryceson of the amazing Miracle’s Mission Charity. Victoria founded this incredible UK organisation, dedicated to protecting animals around the world. It is entirely funded by events and the generosity of public donations. Here we find out a little about the charity and Victoria, the inspiration behind it.
How long have you been vegan?
I have been vegetarian and consumed no eggs for 23 years and I have been fully vegan, stopping the consumption of milk, for 10 years. I absolutely love the vegan lifestyle and only wish I had done it sooner!
Who have been your biggest inspirations in adopting a compassionate and vegan lifestyle?
My biggest inspirations have been the animals themselves. It is purely for the animals that I am vegan and there is no greater inspiration to me than the animals themselves. When I look into the eyes of an animal I can see their heart and their soul, they as a species are begging us for help and their innocence and love is just incredible.
Can you tell us about the reasons for starting Miracle’s Mission?
I started Miracle’s Mission after seeing first hand how severe the stray dog problems were in Malaysia. Every road I turned round there were stray dogs everywhere. I would see literally hundreds in any one day, many of whom had horrific injuries and no one taking care of them or taking them in to help. I couldn’t leave and come back to England without doing something to help and I wanted to help continuously so I set up Miracle’s Mission.
The Daily Mirror Animal Hero Awards is an excellent acknowledgement of the work you have done. Can you tell us about it?
This was such a shock for me that I was even nominated for such an award never mind winning it. There are so many amazing people in the world helping animals that deserve such an award. It was a real honour to win this and a night that I will never forget.
What have been the notable achievements for Miracle’s Mission in improving animal rights around the world?
The differences I see now when I travel to Malaysia are astonishing. I actively have to look for stray dogs now rather than just seeing them on every street. There is still a lot of work to do but I can see huge changes have been made in the last few years. The culture is slowly changing as people are educated more on animal welfare and the next generation grows up being more compassionate towards animals through education. We are teaching children how to look after animals and they are feeding back this education to their parents.
You have an immense amount of energy organising vegan festivals around the UK. How can people reading this volunteer or help?
I am always desperate for help with the festivals as they are a huge amount of work for just one person. If anybody would like to help I would most welcome an email to firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you
Where and when are your next festivals during 2017?
I have a few upcoming festivals, Liverpool on 12th August, Leeds on 2nd September, Wembley on 16th September, Portsmouth on 17th September, Manchester on 30th September, Brighton on 7th and 8th October, Glasgow on 11th and 12th November, Sheffield on 18th November and Leeds on 26th November. I am also currently planning festivals in Nottingham, Leicester, Plymouth, Essex, Shoreditch and some other areas tbc.
When you’re not running Miracle’s Mission or organising festivals what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I have 4 gorgeous rescue dogs, Ben, Star, Tess and Miracle so I absolutely love taking them out for walks in the fields and on the beach and cuddling up with them at home.
Finally, do you have a favourite vegan recipe or dish?
I love all kinds of vegan food so much this is difficult to answer but if I had to choose one I would say lasagne because it’s extremely quick, easy and cheap to make. I use lentil pasta sheets so it’s gluten free as well and you can use any vegetables that you have so it’s an excellent way of using up odd bits of left over veg as well as making the taste different each time. I love Violife* vegan cheese as well, it makes a delicious cheese sauce!
